TAROT & INTERCONNECTEDNESS – How Readings Work
Tarot's archetypes are fluid, living and breathing symbols, patterns, and energies based on and moving through the psychic, spiritual, and social life of humans.
And yet there is nothing particularly “New Age” or otherworldly in tarot's origins – it was created as a sophisticated card game in 15th century Northern Italy, but like many things created through play it eventually developed a life of its own.
The philosophy, tradition, and knowledge it was imbued with got further expanded when the occultists recognized valuable patterns and similarities with mystical currents of the East and the West.
When curious and inventive minds sat down to play but also explore the connection between the individual and the collective, between humanity and spirit, different versions of Tarot sprung up over the centuries, and even more ways to approach it.
Tarot is one of the most powerful, insightful and creative documented journeys of the collective (un)conscious – making quite a journey starting from the ancient versions of card games from Egypt and China which eventually arrived to Italy and soon shaped a playful yet sophisticated skeleton of the Tarot that we know today. Finally, it made its way to France, and then England, where it has been further deepened, developed and refined – made into the powerful and beloved tool we know today.
Art, philosophy, religion, mythology, psychology, literature and poetry – from Petrarch to Shakespeare – all of these sources and influences are very much worldly and present within the uniquely dynamic polyphony that is Tarot, and it is right here, and right now, that we can find and/or create all the answers we need.
The illumination we seek is indeed found within the collective experience that we have all been participating in for millennia – through living, creating, celebrating and mourning, and then telling stories, myths and narratives that are a reflection of who we are, and that offer answers to many of our questions.
Nothing is ever completely new – and everything has already been lived through.
It is only after we realize our part in this cosmic exchange and acknowledge our immersion and participation in the collective experience, that we can heal and form our individuality while expanding it rather than restricting it.
And then it is through the deep and healthy roots of our individuality that we can merge with the collective without losing our essence.
I don't know where one starts and the other begins, and I accept this circular motion in which we go.
Nothing we go through, think, feel, or invent is ever really new, yet it is never stale or static. I believe that connecting with the energies of the past and the present helps us create and shape our future.
Tarot offers us an effective way of tapping into that collective experience and making its accumulated wisdom a part of our consciousness, thus allowing us to come up with fresh and resonant insights, ideas, and solutions for our specific natures and times.
It is a powerful tool for going deep into our souls and psyches, and for realising that that which we thought was lost was simply transformed.
Tarot can help us make sense of the continuous transformations (even when all appears stuck and static) that we and the reality around us are going through;
The interconnectedness between everything and everyone that makes up this world allows for the spiritual and mental passing of sensation and information, be it obvious or arcane, through synchronicity that can be accessed and experienced through the imagery and language of Tarot.
A mind that is experienced, open, and aligned with this truth, can read and interpret the subtle movements of this great spiritual web, examining those threads that most interest us or the querent.
Before we approach the great collective web, it is best we get a deep feel, sense, and understanding of the web that we ourselves have been spinning and weaving and living with – it is starting from our own minds and corners that we can effect the greatest change and reach the greatest distances, jumping nimbly from one thread to another, creating new paths that lead to our goals and visions.
It is through this interconnectedness, this invisible yet omnipresent and powerful web that we can inspect those strings that link us – to ourselves, to others, to places, experiences, or things.
This is how readings (and predictions) are made possible – we tap into the delicate (sometimes knotty) web that connects us, inspect or pull a few threads, and then listen and observe.
What is jumping or sliding out, is it clear or is it foggy, do those strings snap easily, are they rigid, or are they resistant and elastic? Where do they lead, and how? Is the path ahead clear or cluttered, and can we intuit any timelines based on what we sense?
However, as we speak of energy and acknowledge the fluidity and motion of existence, it is a mistake to expect anything to be set in stone and rigidly fixed, or to presume that what we find in one place today will be there tomorrow.
It is about seizing the moment, attuning oneself to the wisdom of impermanence and seeing what truths we can find.
The Wheel of Fortune is constantly turning, set in motion if not by us, then by others. Some things are destined and others we create, but ultimately, everything is subjected to change according to the choices and decisions we make, and the beliefs and thoughts we entertain.
